Serving San Joaquin Valley residents since 1899, Dignity Health’s St. Joseph’s Medical Center looks to the future with a state-of-the-art expansion that focuses on increased capacity, modernization and medical advancement. The new five-story Cortopassi Tower broke ground in April with construction underway and an opening estimated in early 2030.

“This project represents our deeply-rooted commitment to the San Joaquin County community,” says David Ziolkowski, Central Valley Market president and president and CEO of St. Joseph’s Medical Center. “Our leadership in healthcare is demonstrated and strengthened by the significant investment we are making in the city and county.”
In addition to the hospital’s existing 355 beds, the expansion will provide 144 beds, including 24 ICU beds, an increase of more than 40%. This new tower, with upgraded seismic safety and modernized infrastructure, will provide nearly 200,000 additional square feet, expanded emergency department capacity and a new 10-room surgical suite. Trauma and critical care transport capabilities will be enhanced with two additional helipads and a new parking structure will better serve patients and visitors.
As St. Joseph’s Medical Center modernizes facilities, they are also incorporating advanced healthcare technologies to continue providing patients with the most cutting-edge, world-class care right in Stockton. This project not only expands capacity — including the additional beds, expanded emergency department, doubled operating room capacity and additional helipads — but also accelerates development of advanced clinical services such as cardiac, stroke, oncology and cutting-edge robotic surgery.
“This expansion is about much more than just increasing our physical space — we are adding desperately needed capacity and access to best serve our community,” says Ziolkowski. “With San Joaquin County facing a significant physician shortage, we’re committed to leading the charge to ensure local high-quality advanced specialized care for generations to come. This tower provides us with the foundation to attract, train and retain the top-tier primary care physicians and specialists our community relies on.”
For more than a century, St. Joseph’s has served Stockton by prioritizing humankindness and clinical excellence. “This expansion enables us to elevate that mission, blending state-of-the-art technology with significantly expanded capacity to provide a superior healing environment for generations to come,” concludes Ziolkowski.
