Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento has been a stalwart force for 39 years, aiding countless hardworking, low-income families, seniors and veterans in building strength, stability and self-reliance under the safety of their own roof. Over the past nearly four decades, they’ve constructed or repaired over 480 homes, leaving an indelible mark on Sacramento and Yolo counties. This year’s agenda includes building 24 new homes and completing approximately 100 repair projects, ensuring affordable homeownership and averting displacement.
Habitat’s success is deeply rooted in community collaboration. Engaging over 3,000 volunteers annually and forging partnerships with local businesses, they’ve cultivated a network committed to tackling the affordable housing crisis. Their flagship endeavor, “Cornerstone” epitomizes collaboration, boasting 18 Habitat for Humanity affordable homeownership opportunities and 108 units developed in conjunction with affordable rental developer, Mutual Housing California. The community in total will be a place to call home for more than 400 individuals, including children.
“The affordable housing crisis can’t be solved by any one organization, jurisdiction or entity — it takes all of us working together to create out-of-the-box creative solutions to help meet the affordable housing needs in our region,” says Leah Miller, president and CEO for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento.
Sustainability is a core focus, with Habitat homes featuring eco-friendly upgrades — courtesy of support from SMUD — effectively curbing energy costs for homeowners. Looking forward, upcoming projects in Oak Park, Folsom and Citrus Heights signal continued growth and impact.
“Every home we build and repair, every life we change, is made possible because of volunteer muscle, sales from our ReStore, and local donations from individuals and corporations,” says Kimberly Coley, chief advancement and marketing officer.
Inclusivity and diversity are central tenets of the Habitat mission. By dismantling barriers and prioritizing equity, they’ve empowered BIPOC communities and enhanced overall health and financial stability for families.

The impact of their work transcends mere shelter provision. Habitat’s initiatives contribute to improved physical and mental health outcomes, foster educational opportunities and provide pathways to workforce development. Their comprehensive approach empowers families to not only secure housing but also thrive in their communities.
Every achievement stands as a testament to the collective effort of volunteers, donors and community partners. Habitat’s legacy of transforming lives underscores the transformative power of unity and compassion in building a brighter future for all.
