Groth 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville, Napa Valley, $57.50:

This is what I expect from an Oakville appellation wine. It’s big, intense and loaded with luscious black fruit that is further intensified by the Merlot that winemaker Michael Weis has skillfully blended into the mix. The wine shows subtle oak touches and tannins that will bring more complexities with proper cellaring.

Where to find it:

The Firehouse Restaurant (firehouseoldsac.com), Morton’sThe Steakhouse (mortons.com) in Sacramento, Ruth’s Chris Steak House(ruthschris.com) in Sacramento and Roseville, and Whole Foods Markets(wholefoodsmarket.com) across the Capital Region.

What to eat with this wine:

Smoked lamb chops with a honey balsamic barbecue glaze, potato gratin, caramelized cipolin onion and Bartlett pear compote.

Mario Ortiz is the general manager for The Firehouse Restaurant in Old Sacramento.
