The State of News: Truth | Technology | Transformation

California News Publishers Association Capital Conference by California News Publishers Association

Back Event Feb 4, 2019

For 130 years, the California News Publishers Association has protected the shared interests of the state’s news industry, from the largest metropolitan daily to the smallest weekly, by providing legislative advocacy for the industry and working as the sole organization in the state that protects and enhances the public’s right to know.

While our industry is faced with tremendous challenges — from the questioning of truth and facts in journalism to the constant disruptions and advances of rapidly changing technologies — we are staying focused on our mission and embracing the transformation.

Since public policy advocacy has been identified as the single most important activity CNPA engages in on behalf of our over 600 members, being properly represented in Sacramento is crucial to the success of our mission to champion the ideals of a free press in our democratic society and to promote the quality and economic health of the California news industry.

This focus on mission, has led to one of the most significant transformations in the activities of the organization, the combining of our Government Affairs Day and Annual Press Summit into a single event, The Capital Conference to be held at the new Kimpton Sawyer Hotel in Sacramento, February 4-6, 2019.

The inaugural conference programming co-produced by the California Press Foundation, is designed to explore the theme: “The State of News: Trust, Technology, Transformation,” and will feature discussions and presentations on sustainable business models, reporting on California, and conversations with some of California’s most dynamic leaders. We will also present our first “Free Speech Champion” Award to a member of the Legislature who has been a supporter of the First Amendment rights of the Press.

We invite you to join us during this exciting time in our organization’s history and look forward to seeing you in Sacramento.

Keynote Speakers:

Mizell Stewart, III, news executive, Gannett and USA TODAY Network

Norman Pearlstine, executive editor, Los Angeles Times
