Summer Film Series: “La Haine (Hate)”

Presented by the Crocker Art Museum

Back Event Aug 3, 2017 @ 6:30 pm

The Summer Film Series returns, this year showcasing the power of black-and-white. Discover how directors have used this monochromatic style, by choice or by necessity, to achieve a variety of effects, as you explore each movie with local film historian Jacob Greenberg.

A black-and-white short film will precede each screening. “La Haine (Hate)” tells the story of one summer day in the lives of three friends in a Parisian low-income housing project. After an incident of police brutality against their friend and an ensuing riot, the three friends – Vinz, a Jew; Saïd, an Arab; and Hubert, an Afro-Frenchman – distract themselves and avoid the police. When one friend reveals he has found a police revolver, and fears of another riot become imminent, the young men struggle to keep their heads and stay alive. Filmed in stark black and white with raw and brilliant performances, “La Haine” is a compelling human narrative. $6 Museum members, $10 student/youth, $12 nonmembers. Tickets may be purchased at crockerart.org or at the Museum admission desk.
