Join UC Davis Venture Catalyst for a SBIR/STTR Grant Workshop using SBIR/STTR funding to advance technology development, featuring Angela Pollard, Ph.D., grant writing specialist, Eva Garland Consulting, LLC and Eva Garland, Ph.D., Founder and CEO, Eva Garland Consulting, LLC. 

The SBIR/STTR Program, also known as “America’s Seed Fund”, provides nearly $3 billion in funding each year to support the development of innovative technologies.  This workshop will cover all aspects of how to strategically approach obtaining funding from the SBIR/STTR Program.

Topics will include aligning your business and technology development needs with available SBIR/STTR opportunities, proposal development, budgets, and award management.

The workshop will be led by Dr. Eva Garland and Dr. Angela Pollard, who have over 20 years of experience successfully securing hundreds of millions of dollars in SBIR/STTR funding for their own companies as well as for clients.  Members of the Venture Catalyst team will also be available to engage with UC Davis affiliated startups interested in pursuing an SBIR/STTR grant.

About the Speakers: 

Angela Pollard

Dr. Angela Pollard is a Grant Writing Specialist at Eva Garland Consulting. She is formally trained in microbiology, molecular biology, bacterial pathogenesis, and host-pathogen interactions. As a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she was chosen to participate in the Burroughs Wellcome Fund/Sigma Xi Grantsmanship Workshop and was awarded a Ruth L. Kirschstein Institutional National Research Service Award. She then gained experience in drug development at a start-up biotechnology company in Raleigh, North Carolina. Starting as a Senior Scientist, she was promoted to Director of Research within four years. While working at the start-up company, she secured private foundation and federal funds totaling approximately $8 million to support multiple research programs. Dr. Pollard has served on study sections for the NIH and EPA, and has written and reviewed hundreds of SBIR/STTR applications.

Dr. Pollard holds a B.S. in Biological Sciences from Illinois State University; Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Illinois State University

Eva Garland

Dr. Eva Garland is the founder and CEO of Eva Garland Consulting, LLC (EGC), which is headquartered in Raleigh, NC. Founded in 2013, EGC assists technology companies in obtaining and managing grant funding. EGC’s team of 22 Ph.D. scientists and grants management specialists work with clients to develop strategic non-dilutive funding plans; prepare grant applications; and provide grant compliance and accounting services. The company specializes in working with early stage technology companies, assisting them with tapping into the $3B of funding available through the federal Small Business Innovate Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grant programs, as well as other federal, state, and private grant opportunities. EGC is a partner for the LiftOff Program at First Flight Venture Center, an innovative program to help North Carolina’s scientific entrepreneurs get early funding for their technology start-ups. In 2018, EGC was recognized as one of the fastest-growing companies in the nation, as well as the #1 fastest-grown woman-led company in the state of North Carolina.

Dr. Garland has published a book on Winning SBIR Grants (available on Amazon.com), and she also serves as a member of SBIR/STTR review panels. She serves as an Investment Advisor for Fission Ventures, a VC fund that invest in Columbia University-connected companies.

Dr. Garland holds a B.A. from Columbia University and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Caltech, and was formerly a faculty member in the Chemistry department at NC State University.
