Empowering Communities: Alice Dowdin Calvillo’s Visionary Leadership

PIONEER COMMUNITY ENERGY

Back Sponsored Feb 27, 2026

In the ever-changing world of energy, few leaders embody community-driven transformation like Alice Dowdin Calvillo, board chair of Pioneer Community Energy and Auburn City Councilmember. Now in her fifth year steering the organization, Alice has been instrumental in growing Pioneer from a nascent community choice aggregator (CCA) to what will be California’s geographically largest CCA by the end of 2027 when service launches in 16 new territories, providing a choice in energy options to customers.

Her tenure reflects a rare blend of industry knowledge, fiscal prudence and an unwavering commitment to the communities she serves, earning her recognition as a beacon for women in leadership.

Dowdin Calvillo’s dedication to customer savings is evident in the $145 million Pioneer has delivered back to ratepayers since 2018. Those savings are reinvested locally through money-saving programs and power purchase agreements with regional partners like the El Dorado Irrigation District, Placer County Water Agency and Sierra Pacific Industries. Pioneer also supports economic development projects ranging from biomass facilities to microgrids, each advancing Pioneer’s “community first” mission while addressing pressing local needs such as wildfire mitigation.

Equally important, Dowdin Calvillo is leading a forward-thinking approach to technology. She believes that innovation only matters when it makes life better for people — when renewable projects, grid solutions or emerging tools serve communities, not just markets. The Pioneer leadership team examines technologies in ways that make things matter, ensuring every investment supports resilience, compliance and long-term value for customers.

What continues to set Dowdin Calvillo apart is her grounded leadership style: thoughtful, informed and consistently centered on people. She aligns major decisions with Pioneer’s guiding principles of community partnership, fiscal strength, exceptional service and workplace excellence. Beyond the boardroom, she embraces her deep Auburn roots, seeing her local leadership on the city council as an opportunity to create lasting impact. She takes pride in the women who now lead beside her, celebrating how far they have come and the progress they continue to champion.

As Pioneer expands, Dowdin Calvillo’s leadership ensures that communities and customers not only save money but also share in the many tangible benefits that Pioneer offers — a vision where energy truly empowers.
