In California’s evolving health care landscape, patients are increasingly drawn to personalized care, direct access and strong community connections. This is the domain of independent physicians and small group practices, now united under a single, powerful voice: the Physician Association of California (PAC).
“The more we can clear the path for independent physicians, the more patients can access high-quality, local care.”— Matthew Robinson, CEO, PAC
Launched in 2024, PAC is California’s only trade association exclusively dedicated to protecting and enhancing private medical practice. With a growing membership of over 15,000 physicians, PAC is establishing itself as a formidable advocate in Sacramento, championing policies that preserve physician autonomy, streamline health care delivery and expand patient access.
“Our mission is simple,” says Matthew Robinson, CEO of PAC. “We want to see more independent practices thrive across California. Our members deliver personalized, community-based care that large health systems often can’t provide. We’re here to protect and grow that model.”
This year, PAC sponsored legislation aimed at eliminating barriers for private practice physicians. The bill cuts through bureaucratic processes that delay physician credentialing and access to care — just one example of PAC’s efforts to remove unnecessary strain on small practices.
“The more we can clear the path for independent physicians, the more patients can access high-quality, local care,” says Robinson.
In addition to legislative advocacy, PAC fosters meaningful engagement among its members through advocacy opportunities, political events, conferences, webinars and market intelligence. These gatherings allow independent physicians to strengthen connections with colleagues and policymakers. PAC also collaborates with partner organizations to grow its advocacy reach, pushing for patient-centered approaches that prioritize autonomy, equity and accessibility in health care.
Looking ahead, PAC’s agenda remains laser-focused on empowering independent physicians and championing patient-centered care.
“We aim to set the standard for what independent practice can achieve in California,” Robinson says. “Our movement is about creating greater access and convenience for patients while strengthening small and independent practices across countless communities.”
Robinson encourages every private practice physician in California to join PAC and get involved in protecting their interests and secure the future of independent medicine. As the organization grows in numbers, it is actively shaping health care policy in California and fighting to keep the doors of private practices open.
