Placer County continues to excel in education, yet even in high-achieving communities, literacy gaps persist. Reading, writing and overall literacy have always been the foundation of learning, but recent data has revealed an urgent truth: while literacy is fundamental, it is not guaranteed for every student. After a year of research, analysis and collaboration, the Placer County Office of Education is bringing literacy back to the forefront with the launch of the Placer County Reads Initiative this month.
Research has shown that the impact of literacy education at an early age can be substantial, with children under 5 who are exposed to books and storytelling developing stronger language, communication and cognitive skills than their peers. Early literacy activities help expand vocabulary, boost self-expression and support emotional growth.
“Literacy is the foundation of all learning. When we give children the tools to read and comprehend, we open the door to every other subject, every opportunity and every dream. This initiative reflects our deep commitment to educational excellence and to the future of every learner in our community.” — Gayle Garbolino-Mojica, Superintendent of Schools
“Literacy is the foundation of all learning. Thanks to their consistent commitment, Placer County Office of Education has taken this research and turned it into a countywide program that unites educators, families and community partners with a shared goal: making sure that all students are prepared to thrive in their education, their careers and their general lives.
Through a variety of innovative teaching strategies along with a mix of community-based literacy events, Placer County Reads is taking these tools and building more than a program — they are creating a movement to empower the next generation.
