Dr. Michelle Rodriguez, in her second year as superintendent of Stockton Unified School District, is making significant strides in improving student outcomes and expanding educational opportunities.
Under Rodriguez’s leadership, SUSD has achieved its highest graduation rates in SUSD history, reduced chronic absenteeism and increased reading proficiency. These accomplishments are prominently displayed on the district’s website accountability dashboard.
Rodriguez, who comes from a family of educators, describes education as her passion. “We would have dinners at the dinner table and my family would talk about advocating for students and leading with the head and heart,” she says. The bilingual superintendent, who studied in California and Spain, brings a wealth of experience to her role. Her career includes positions as a dual immersion teacher, reading recovery teacher, principal, chief academic officer and many years as a superintendent.
“Education is not just a profession for me, it’s actually my passion,” Rodriguez emphasizes.
SUSD, which serves over 36,000 students across 55 schools, is focusing on equity and student support. The district has implemented equity teams, Positive Behavior Interventions and Support Teams, and a Superintendent Student Advisory Committee to amplify student voices.
Rodriguez is also championing the district’s 19 specialty schools, which offer focused programs in areas such as STEM, performing arts and early college preparation. Rodriguez says, “We must provide every child with a world-class education that leads to their passions, interests and talents.” SUSD is proud to highlight the availability of its specialty schools and applications are being accepted now. Rodriguez explains, “We recognize every child is unique and their educational journey should reflect their individuality,”
